One of the main sets in the series, Stone in the Wood had to give a lot of town in camera for what was not a lot of stage space. We did this by creating twisting paths through the back of the set, layering thick roots and branches of trees and sections of rock that peak in to frame, which shot from an opposing angle create a totally different piece of set.
There was 270 degrees of painted backing, going deep in to forest on one side and out over a vista on the other. We carefully positioned the points of interest on the backing to fall between the gaps in the set pieces, and then finally cut out the windows of buildings on the finished backing. Lights were added behind windows and over doors for added life and depth and so as much as possible could be shot in camera.
